Bill Crounse, MD

Director, Worldwide Health, Microsoft Corporation

Bill Crounse, MD, is Worldwide Health Director for Microsoft Corporation. He is responsible for providing thought leadership, vision and strategy for Microsoft technologies and solutions in the healthcare provider industry. He is also responsible for working with industry partners and healthcare organizations to help them benefit from using Microsoft technologies and solutions as an essential platform for line-of-business applications in the healthcare industry. Dr Crounse travels nationally and internationally to evangelize the use of information technology as a way to improve care quality and safety, and the satisfaction of those who provide and receive it.

Dr Crounse is known locally and nationally for his work in medical communications. He has written and produced dozens of articles and audio-casts and videos for www.microsoft.com/healthcare and is the primary contributor to Microsoft’s Health Blog. He has been a medical writer and editor for Microsoft Corporation’s employee Intranet site and was Medical Editor for KIRO-TV, Channel 7 (CBS) in Seattle. He has also served as a physician broadcaster and medical editor for KOMO-TV (ABC Seattle), ABC Network News (The Health Show), Lifetime Medical Television (Physicians Journal Update), The Discovery Channel, and Medical News Network.

Kathryn J. Hannah, RN, PhD

Professor, University of Calgary

Dr Kathryn J Hannah is a nurse and a senior, health informatics consultant specializing in information management in health environments. With over 30 years of experience in academia, health care delivery, government and the private sector, Dr Hannah has a rich depth of knowledge and experience in health care delivery organizations, the health system and in nursing. She is an acknowledged Canadian leader in health information data standards. She also has extensive experience in knowledge transfer and change management as a consultant, workshop leader and an educator. Her skills and experience as a facilitator are respected internationally.

Dr Hannah has long been active in promoting the use of information systems in health care, both nationally and internationally. She has taught and conducted research in the rapidly evolving field of health informatics in her role as Professor and subsequently Adjunct Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Dr Hannah is the author of several textbooks and numerous articles on computers in healthcare, as well as health informatics. She is coeditor, with Dr Marion Ball, of the highly respected Health Care Informatics Series (formerly Computers in Healthcare) published by Springer-Verlag. The American College of Medical Informatics recognized Dr Hannah’s contribution to healthcare informatics by electing her a fellow of the College in November 1989. Dr Hannah was awarded the title Maestro Illustre in March 1993 by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. Most recently, Dr Hannah was awarded the Medical College of Georgia distinguished Alumni Award for 2005 and the CIHI Partnership for Health Informatics Standards Peer Recognition Award for 2005.

Jim Karkanias

Senior Director of Applied Research and Technology, Microsoft Corporation

Jim Karkanias is Senior Director of Applied Research and Technology at Microsoft Corporation. Formally trained as a researcher, Jim began his career as a bench scientist conducting neuroscience research for McNeil Pharmaceutical. Later, his pre-clinical research career expanded to encompass clinical research in the neurosciences and graduate work in bioengineering. In that span of time, his research uncovered many interesting ideas in areas spanning neuroplasticity, sensorium integration, pain modulation, cognition, memory, and network theory. In addition, to his research skills Jim Karkanias developed significant computer hardware and software technical skills as a consequence of a desire to continuously streamline his activities. This eventually led to a leadership position in Merck as Head of Operations for Clinical Development Programs in U.S. Human Health, where he helped to revolutionize their business. He is now applying these skills in a new venture at Microsoft – the Health Strategy Group – which aims to revolutionize healthcare through paradigm shifting approaches that integrate next generation business, process and technology.

Leland Lancaster, Jr., MD

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN

Dr Lancaster is a solutions-focused, multifaceted physician and business development professional demonstrating expertise in building high performing organizations. He has proven his capabilities in driving progressive change utilizing clinical experience to create innovative strategies that support the successful launch of new products. Dr Lancaster has a diverse background in financial management, strategic market penetration, technology procurement and staff development. He also has broad experience in collaborating with senior physician specialists, boards of directors and executive leaders.

Dr Lancaster is currently involved with VPI Technologies, Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN as Director of Business Development, as well as Assistant Professor, in the Department of Anesthesia. He is also the Finance Director of AGR Incorporated (Anesthetic Gas Reclamation) in Nashville.
